For those of you who weren’t fortunate enough to be watching the webcam earlier this afternoon, I’m delighted to tell you that we now have a third egg on the osprey nest at Loch of the Lowes.

At about 12.35 we noticed that our female had become very restless, laying low in the nest, panting heavily and tail lifting. At 12.38 we witnessed what appeared to be two large contractions and then she stood up to reveal the third egg, much to the excitement of the assembled crowd of staff, volunteers and visitors!

It took a few minutes of shuffling and rearranging on the part of the female before we were able to see all three eggs clearly – the nest is so well lined with grass & moss this year that at least one of the eggs tends to be obscured.

Needless to say we couldn’t be happier with our clutch of three as this now means we have three chances for chicks hatching and fledging from the nest this year. And who knows… a fourth egg could still be a possibility.

Keep an eye on the webcam at scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/ospreycam to find out what happens next!
