Historic Ruins in the Forest

Discover in the Allean Forest, the well preserved remains of an eighth century "ring fort" in a commanding position overlooking Loch Tummel. Ring-forts are now known as ‘homesteads’.

This reflects the changing understanding of their purpose from defensive forts in a turbulent landscape to living spaces where some protection was needed but where domestic activity was emphasised. There are several homesteads overlooking Loch Tummel.

Also close by in the forest is a reconstructed 18th century farmhouse, known as a ‘clachan’ or ‘blackhouse’.
